Cannot make outgoing calls over a landline

You cannot use a telephone connected to the FRITZ!Box to make calls over your landline.

Important:Some of the settings described here are only displayed if the advanced view is enabled in the user interface. The configuration procedure and notes on functions given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS.

Simply proceed as described below. After each measure, check whether the issue persists.

1 Installing the latest FRITZ!OS

2 Enabling the landline settings

  1. Click "Telephony" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Telephone Numbers" in the "Telephony" menu.
  3. Click on the "Line Settings" tab.
  4. Enable the option "Landline network enabled".
  5. Click "Apply" to save your settings.

3 Entering your location information

  1. Click "Telephony" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Telephone Numbers" in the "Telephony" menu.
  3. Click on the "Line Settings" tab.
  4. Select your country from the drop-down list under "Location Information". If your country is not included in the list, select "Other country".
  5. For the "Country code", enter the country code prefix in the first field and the country code in the second field (for example for Germany "00" and "49", see fig.).
  6. For the "Area code", enter the area code prefix in the first field and the area code in the second field (for example for Berlin "0" and "30", see fig.).

Fig.: Entering the country code and area code (e.g. for Germany and Berlin)

  7. Click "Apply" to save your settings.

4 Selecting the correct line type

The line type you must select when configuring your landline number(s) depends on how the FRITZ!Box is connected to the telephone line and not the number of available numbers. For example, if you have an ISDN line with one number, you must select the line type "multiple landline numbers (ISDN line)":

  1. Click "Telephony" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Telephone Numbers" in the "Telephony" menu.
  3. Click the "New Telephone Number" button.
  4. Enable the option "Landline number" and click "Next".
  5. Select the type of landline and click "Next".

Important:You will only be asked to select the type of landline (analog or ISDN line) when you configure the first landline number. If you would like to change the type of landline later, you must first delete all of the landline numbers you entered.

  6. Enter your landline number or ISDN telephone numbers (MSNs) and click "Next".

5 Setting up FRITZ!App Fon

Defining telephone numbers for FRITZ!App Fon

  1. Click "Telephony" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Telephony Devices" in the "Telephony" menu.
  3. Click the button (Edit) for FRITZ!App Fon. When it was installed, FRITZ!App Fon was automatically configured with the telephone's device name on the "LAN/WLAN" port in the FRITZ!Box.
  4. From the drop-down list "Outgoing Calls", select the number to be used by FRITZ!App Fon for making calls.
  5. Select the numbers that FRITZ!App Fon should react to when you receive calls.
  6. Click "OK" to save the settings.

Enabling alternative microphone

The following steps are only necessary if the issue occurs when using FRITZ!App Fon with an Android device:

  1. Start FRITZ!App Fon.
  2. Tap "More" and then "Settings".
  3. Tap the menu key on the telephone and then tap "Advanced".
  4. Enable the option "Alternative microphone".

6 Disabling HD telephony

  1. Enter #962*2* on your telephone and press the call key (lift the receiver).
  2. Hang up again after about 3 seconds.

Note:You can re-enable HD telephony by entering #962*1*.

7 Checking the cabling

Mistakes in the cabling can often be overlooked. Therefore, make sure that the FRITZ!Box is correctly connected to your line:

  • Check the cabling to your landline.

8 Setting your analog telephone to tone dialing

  • Set your telephone to "tone dialing" (DTMF) and not "pulse dialing". You can find information on configuring the device in its manual, or consult its manufacturer directly.

Note:If you hear a tone when you press a number key, then your telephone is set for "tone dialing". If you hear clicking sounds, it is set for "pulse dialing".

9 Connecting and configuring an ISDN telephone

Preparations

  • Configure the devices so that you can dial special characters (such as * and #) or send keypad sequences (sequences of symbols and digits, such as *121#) with them.

Note:Many Gigaset telephones can be configured as follows: Select "Operation at a PBX" from the telephone's menu, then select "Dialing options" and enable the option "Dial * and #".

Disabling the transmission of text information on your ISDN telephone

When making calls with an ISDN telephone, the FRITZ!Box sends certain text information to the telephone. This way you can see on the display of your telephone which number is being used to make the call, for example. However, some ISDN telephones cannot process this text information properly. Therefore, disable the function in the FRITZ!Box for testing purposes:

  1. Enter #960*0* on your telephone and press the call key (lift receiver).
  2. Hang up again after about 3 seconds.

Note:You can re-enable this function by entering #960*2*.

Disabling the energy-saving mode on your ISDN telephone

The FRITZ!Box is equipped with a number of energy-saving mechanisms. For example, when idle, the internal S0 bus of the FRITZ!Box terminates communication between it and the ISDN device.

Some ISDN devices have problems with this function. Therefore, disable this function in the FRITZ!Box:

  1. Enter #966*1* on your telephone and press the call key (lift the receiver).
  2. Hang up again after about 3 seconds.

Note:You can re-enable this function by entering #966*0*.

Resetting the ISDN telephone

  • On the telephone, delete all numbers (MSNs), all preselection numbers, and all dialing rules.

Connecting a single ISDN telephone

  1. Disconnect all terminal devices (such as telephones, PBXs, faxes) and cables from the "FON S0" port.
  2. Connect a single telephone to the "FON S0" port. Do not connect the telephone to the FRITZ!Box by means of a PBX or an ISDN hub.
  3. Check whether you can now make calls with the ISDN telephone.
    • If you cannot make outgoing calls:
      • Proceed with the following section. Do not connect any further telephony devices yet.
    • If you can make calls, then another device or its cable is defective, or a device is incorrectly configured (for example incorrect telephone numbers, dialing rules). To find out which device was causing the issue:
      • Connect the other ISDN devices again. Do not connect more than one ISDN device without its own power supply to the "FON S0" port.
        • If the error occurs again after you connect a particular ISDN device, then the device or its cable is defective.
        • If the error occurs again after you connect a PBX, then the PBX is either defective or incorrectly configured, for example incorrect telephone numbers, incorrect dialing rules, or dial around services.

10 Configuring the FRITZ!Box

Reconfiguring your telephone

  1. Click "Telephony" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Telephony Devices" in the "Telephony" menu.
  3. Delete the telephone that cannot be used to make calls with. To do so, click the corresponding (Delete) button.
  4. Use the Wizard for telephony devices to reconfigure the telephone: To do so, click the "Configure New Device" button and follow the instructions.

Important:Do not use the Wizard for telephony devices to configure FRITZ!App Fon. FRITZ!App Fon is automatically reconfigured when you close FRITZ!App Fon completely and then restart the app.

Deleting dialing rules

  1. Click "Telephony" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Call Handling" in the "Telephony" menu.
  3. Click on the "Dialing Rules" tab.
  4. Delete all dialing rules for numbers or number ranges to be dialed from the landline. In the factory settings, two dialing rules are configured for emergency numbers. You can change these rules, but you cannot delete or block them.
  5. If a "Global Carrier Prefix" has been entered on the "Carrier Prefixes" tab, delete it and click "Apply".
  6. Do not enter any new dialing rules until you are able to conduct calls from the landline. If the error occurs again, then you are using an incorrect dialing rule.

11 Checking the landline

  1. Disconnect the FRITZ!Box from the landline.
  2. Connect a telephony device to the same telephone line and check whether it works.
  3. If this telephony device also does not work when connected to the telephone line, contact your telephony provider and have your line checked.

ATTENTION!You may be charged for checking. Ask your telephony provider about charges in advance!
