FRITZ!Box 3272 – Service

Setting up wireless guest access (private hotspot) in IP client mode in the FRITZ!Box

If you have two FRITZ!Boxes, you can configure the FRITZ!Box (IP client) that shares the Internet connection of the other FRITZ!Box (router) so that it:

  • applies all of the settings for guest access from the FRITZ!Box (router). The wireless devices used by your guests then automatically connect to the guest network with the strongest signal (roaming). If you limited the guest access in the FRITZ!Box (router), for example to certain times or web sites, then these restrictions are also valid for the wireless devices connected to the FRITZ!Box (IP client).
  • provides an additional wireless guest network with separate security settings. The wireless devices used by your guests must then either connect to the guest network of the FRITZ!Box (router) or the guest network of the FRITZ!Box (IP client). If a captive portal is configured in the FRITZ!Box (router), then it is displayed when accessing the guest access of the FRITZ!Box (IP client).

Requirements / Restrictions

  • The FRITZ!Box (IP client) must be configured for the operating mode "Share existing Internet connection in the network (IP client mode)".
  • FRITZ!OS 6.07 or later must be installed on the FRITZ!Box (router).
  • Wireless devices in the guest network must be configured to automatically obtain IP settings (DHCP).
  • IPTV playback and other FRITZ!Box functions (such as port sharing, telephony) are not available when using guest access.

Note:The configuration procedure and notes on functions given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS for your FRITZ!Box.

Follow the instructions in the section that describes the desired scenario.

1 Using the guest access of the FRITZ!Box (router)

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the user interface of the FRITZ!Box (IP client).
  2. Click "Guest Access" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. Enable the option "Apply settings for guest access from the FRITZ!Box used as an Internet router".

Note:In order to apply the settings for guest access, wireless guest access must be enabled in the FRITZ!Box (router).

  4. Click "Apply" to save your settings.

Guest access is now configured and the wireless devices used by your guests automatically connect to the guest network with the strongest signal.

If you change the settings for guest access in the FRITZ!Box (router) later, push the "WLAN" or "WPS" button on the FRITZ!Box and hold it down until the "WLAN" LED starts to flash. This causes the new settings to be transmitted to the FRITZ!Box (IP client).

2 Using the guest access of the FRITZ!Box (IP client)

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the user interface of the FRITZ!Box (IP client).
  2. Click "Guest Access" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. Disable the option "Apply settings for guest access from the FRITZ!Box used as an Internet router".
  4. Enable the guest access.
  5. For the "Name of the guest radio network (SSID)", enter the name that guests should see when they search for wireless networks.
  6. Select the encryption method from the drop-down list "Encryption". WPA2 encryption offers the best security.
  7. Enter a password of your choice that is between 8 and 63 characters long in the "Network key" field.

Important:To ensure optimal security, the password should be at least 20 characters long and contain capital and lower-case letters (but not letters such as ä, ë, ö, ü, é, í), digits, and other characters.

  8. Enable the option "The wireless devices connected with the guest access can communicate with each other" if wireless devices should be allowed to exchange data with each other.
  9. If you want guest access to be disabled automatically, enable the corresponding option and define when it should be disabled.
  10. Click "Apply" to save your settings.
